Activists in Likoni sub county, Mombasa County are urging the youth to focus on creating a positive image in the community in order avoid getting into violent extremism.

According to the human rights defenders challenges facing the youth can only be solved by youth themselves adding that they (youth) are the game changers.

Speaking to the media in Mombasa on Wednesday during a youth leader’s forum, Manyatta Youth Entertainment Director Nicholas Songora said youth are their own shapers of their destiny and should therefore have positive attitude towards life.

“We are our own solution. Imagine how many role models do we have in Likoni Sub County who have made it in life,” the executive said.

The executive says youth should be ambassadors of change and more so peace builders focusing on spreading the message of peace.

He noted that Likoni Sub County has produced the best human resources ever including among others: doctors, teachers, trainer, musicians, Dee jays and renowned journalists.

“Nobody should decide what you should be as a youth. We are the ambassadors. If somebody made it why not me,” Songora asked.

Songora urged the youth to counter the VE narrative that has been in existence over ages further urging them to refrain from unethical vices that could ruin their lives.

On her part, Manyatta Youth Entertainment programs Officer Esther Ndarigho said youth play a significant role in the community.

She however admitted that there exists a gap in the community of role models saying despite having dozens of them they have not been profiled yet.

“It is high time the youth realize their potential. It is not a time to blame our parents. I want to tell my fellow youths to do something about their lives,” she said.

According to her youths require role models to emulate on the right path of life.

Ndarigho noted that the role of the forum is to single out youth leaders who will guide vulnerable youths within Likoni sub county.

“We are here to map out leaders who will act as role models to the vulnerable youths in this area,” Ndarigho noted.

The forum brought together over twenty five youth leaders from Likoni Sub County.

According to MAYE executive director Nicholas Songora the three years project dubbed ‘Shrinking The Space Against Violent Extremism Thriving’ targets youths aged 15- 25 within Likoni sub county.
