Changamwe legislator Omar Mwinyi has called on county bosses to invest more in agriculture saying it is the only sure way to empower youths throughout the country.

The legislator says agriculture being the backbone of the country, needs to be scaled up to benefit the population.

“I’m here to meet the Mombasa chapter ASK organizing committee. Preparations are underway. We need to insist youth to attend this show,” he said.

He was speaking to journalists at the Agricultural Society of Kenya ASK ground on Tuesday after meeting ASK officials.

Mwinyi also wants the county department of agriculture to scale up innovation among the youths.

“There is so much that we need to learn from this show. It is not wise for Mombasa County to depend so much from other counties. We also have the opportunity to produce agricultural goods,” said Mwinyi.

He says there is need for the county government to put to use idle and waste land for agricultural production saying it can be self-reliant and avoid interdependence.

Agricultural Society of Kenya Chairperson Anisa Abdalla says over 160 exhibitors have so far confirmed out of a target of 200 exhibitors.

She urged Kenyans to visit the arena beginning from September 4 to September 8.

“These are our show dates from 4th to 8th September. We shall have various visitors including governors,” she said.

The chairperson says this year, as an organizer of the international trade fair Kenyans will have an opportunity to have a variety of crops and other goodies.

Mwinyi wants the county government to invest in green house and small scale agriculture as a way of boosting agriculture within the county.

The lawmaker called on Coast county governors to work together to ensure that agriculture production is enhanced.

Commenting on the recent reshuffle of top security officers in the Coast region, the law maker says there is need for the country to change its style of leadership.

According to him, justice and equality is key when appointing public officers.

“There is no need for us to have a police boss if there can be no law and order, I recommend that police officers must do their job,” he said.

The theme of this year is Promoting Innovation and Technology in Agriculture and Trade.
