The department of Agriculture, Livestock and fisheries in Mombasa County has pledged to support Manyatta Youth Entertainment, a Community based organization in its bid to help vulnerable youths venture in agricultural production in Likoni Sub County.

Speaking to Manyatta Youth Entertainment staff after paying a courtesy call at his office on Thursday county chief executive in charge of agriculture Hassan Mwamtoa promised to invest in the four acre farm owned by the CBO.

"I want to assure you that my department is rallying behind you. This is a very good initiative. We shall invest in your farm,” he said.

Hon Mwamtoa says in partnership with MAYE the department is committed to invest in the youth in a bid to address the some of the teething problems in the county.

Mr Mwamtoa insisted that governor Joho has spearheaded other counties on issues of countering violent extremism adding that plans are underway to award him for the mission.

“We are committed as a county to ensure that we address some of the challenges facing youths in Mombasa county. You know that our Governor has been at the forefront in this war,” Hon Mwamtoa said.

According to the CEC a plan is already in place to set up a fishing market in Likoni Sub County.

MAYE Executive Director Nicholas Songora says food sufficiency in most households is one of the key drivers of youth recruitment into violent extremism.

The director says “The agribusiness targeting on young people in Likoni is aimed at not only benefiting the 30 SAVET Program beneficiaries but also have an impact on the community through engaging in food production,”

According to the director the CBO’s plan is to have a sustainable program even after the three years SAVET program ends in 2021.

Mr Songora notes that the CBO is currently developing a model for not only the sub county but the entire Mombasa County.

“We are developing a model for Likoni Sub County and the entire county, the director said through Whatsapp.”

The CBO has been a key player in Mombasa PCVE engagement forum; a steering committee on prevention and countering violent extremism that looks at the implementation of the 5 years Mombasa county action plan on preventing violent extremism.

The CBO has selected 30 youths under “The Shrinking the Space Against Violent Extremism Thriving” SAVET program to engage in agribusiness and will offer practical skills in agriculture to the youths to help them set up farming as well as youth groups.

Manyatta Youth Entertainment has received an overwhelming support from the National Government through the area Deputy County Commissioner office Eric Wamulevu who has been a close partner in peace building and security in Likoni sub county.
