Mombasa county government commits ksh 3.5 million on FP in 2018-2019 financial year- says County adolescent coordinator

The county government of Mombasa has committed a financial kitty of ksh 3.5 million to boost family planning in the 2018 2019 financial year.

The funds according to the county adolescent coordinator Baraka Imani will addressing some of the challenges that Mombasa locals face on issues of family planning.

“The county government has committed a total of 3.5 million to boost FP uptake in Mombasa county” Baraka Imani county adolescent coordinator said
Out of the 3.5 million the county has committed, a total of ksh 500,000 targets Adolescents’ Young and Sexual Reproductive Health (AYSRH)
Speaking to the media in Mombasa on Tuesday Mombasa County adolescent and youth sexual reproductive officer Baraka Imani said the county is currently implementing two programs including family planning and AYSRH.
“A total of ksh 500,000 has targeted AYSRH. This is because our youths are vulnerable” he said
He further added that the department targets to strengthen all youth friendly services within the county.
He however notes that a lot more needs to be done on family planning.

However, Pwani Youth Network executive director Alfred Sigo argues that the budget is insufficient.
According to him, it cannot suffice the needs of all the young people within the county.
“The money is inadequate. That money should be increased. Again the county government may use this fund to its trainers only” he said
He urged the county government to channel the funds to buy FP commodities in order to benefit the youth expressing concern that the funds might be diverted to paying trainers.
Haki Yetu Organization human right crusader John Paul called on civil right crusaders to develop a clear strategy in mapping out youth friendly centers and services within the county.
He urged the county government to streamline by implementing its programs at the health facilities.
“CSOs should come up with a clear strategy on how to map out youth friendly facilities” John Paul said
Another activist Norman Otieno appealed for inclusivity of the youth on accessing YFS.
According to him the county should mostly invest in youth dialogues to boost in FP uptake.
“I want to tell ask the county government to invest more in youth dialogues. This is because most of the youth are normally not included in some of the activities” he said
He argues that most of the service providers are past the youth age.
An activist who spoke on condition of anonymity urged CSOs to speak up with one voice.
The human rights defender urged “CSOs to take action on health related matters instead of criticizing every move by the county government”
The activist says health is a concern to all Kenyans including the youth and CSOs should address it amicably.
While Stretchers youth organization finance manager James Atito called on for the delopment of the implementation framework of the Adolescent and young people strategy AYP by the county government.
“We want the county government to implement the AYP Strategy. There is no implementation framework so far” he insisted
He further called on CSO’s to jointly work together to ensure that the AYP Strategy is fully implemented.
Atito argues that there is need for more advocacy in order to achieve a fully-fledged FP program.
“We need to do as CSO’s more advocacy. As CSOs we should work together to achieve a common objective” Atito said
 The one day engagement forum was held at Royal Court hotel on Wednesday.
Over 15 civil society groups in Mombasa County attended the forum organized by Deutsche Stiflung Weltbevolkerung (DSW)
The organizations that attended the forum include among others Dream Achievers Youth Organization, (DAYO) Pwani Youth Network, FIDA Kenya, Haki Yetu Organization, Mlaleo Youth Group, Alfa and Omega and Stretchers Youth Organization.

Invest more in reproductive health budget- activists petition Mombasa county government
