The Senate Justice Legal Affairs and Human Rights committee has reiterated its commitment in addressing extra judicial killings and forced disappearance in the Coast region.

Speaking during a public participation in Mombasa on Monday the committee chairperson Samson Cherargei said the coast region has been adversely affected by cases of extra judicial killings and forced disappearances.

“Extra judicial killings and forced disappearances has affected this region Coast. As a committee we must and are committed to ensure that these cases are addressed to the later” he said

He assured Kenyans that the committee will jointly work with various stakeholders including the civil society to fully address the issue.

The Nandi senator also noted that the committee has a close link with office of the Director of Criminal Investigation DCI and the Director of Public Prosecution DPP in order to address the issue.

“We are working closely with the DCI and the DPP so that we can address these issues. I know it is a problem in Mombasa County and the Coast region at large” he said

Mombasa Senator Mohammed Faki urged the police to uphold the rule of law while on duty.

He argues that parents of extra judicial killing victims and forced disappearances are lamenting with no one to turn.

“Our police are trained while the citizens are weak because they are not trained. Let the police use the right way when on duty” he noted

Faki says “parents of extra judicial killings victims under go dozens of challenges that require immediate government intervention”

The Mombasa Senator argued that every Kenyan has a right to as enshrined in the constitution 2010.

“Let the police adhere to the rule of law. I also know of four people who disappeared without a trace. Parents of these victims are going through challenges” Hon Faki insisted

On his part, Kilifi County senator Stewart Madzayo accused the police on claims of laxity in the implementation of their duty.

According to him the police have failed in their duty of protecting Kenyans.

“I call on the police to uphold the law. Most of these cases have been happening in the region. Mostly in Mombasa” he noted

He further urged the police to uphold the rule of law saying it is their legal rights.

Invest more in reproductive health budget- activists petition Mombasa county government
