MCA's trip to Egypt costing Mombasa residents over 3.2 million- activists allege.

The Egyptian trip made by a section of Mombasa county assembly members will cost the taxpayer over 3.2 million, human rights defenders have alleged.

According to the human rights activists the move is a waste public resources.

In a joint statement in Mombasa on Sunday Manyatta Youth entertainment executive director Nicholas Songora accused the MCA’s on claims of approving for themselves items that had not originally been budgeted for adding that the trip was unnecessary.

This is after reports revealed that nine MCA’s from Mombasa County traveled to Egypt for a bench marking initiative.

“In what appears to be wanton misuse of county resources, they are using millions of shillings for unnecessary foreign trips,” said MAYE executive director Nicholas Songora.

The groups, Pwani Social Justice Centre, Haki Africa, Human Rights Agenda and Manyatta Youth Entertainment CBO say Mombasa MCAs have been approving items that were not originally budgeted for.

Meanwhile Haki Africa executive director Hussein Khalid says the trip is valueless to the locals.

Khalid asked “What lessons are they going to learn that will benefit the county? Despite many other sports priorities that the county has, was this trip a priority?”

The nine MCA’s include Ali Sheriff (Tononoka) Charles Kitula (Frere Town ward), Fahad Kassim (Mjambere) Abrar Omar (Kongowea), Athman Shebe (Jomvu), Ahmed Hamisi Nyundo (Majengo), Mwalimu Mbushe (Shika Adabu) and Tobias Samba (Tudor).

According to the activists each MCA is receiving an allowance of US dollars 331 an equivalent of Ksh 33,100 per day with an air ticket of US dollars 500 an equivalent of 50,000 for every MCA to and fro.
