Disability community accuse Mombasa County of failing to access NHIF

A section of the disability community in Mombasa County has accused the county government on claims of failing to access the National Hospital Insurance Fund initiative offered by the National government.

Speaking to the press in Mombasa on Saturday, Tunaweza Women with Disability Executive Director Charity Chahasi said the county government has been evangelizing on the same but no action taken.

“We have not been included in the national security fund initiative. We are only see county officials from the health department speaking about this during meetings” she noted

She pointed that the county government has been reluctant in including the disabled in the government initiative.

Chahasi further noted that people living with disability require closer medical attention noting that it should be spread out to all PWD’s.

“The county government has been so reluctant about this. No PWD’s have been included” the chief executive officer stated

At the same time he said county governments of have a sole responsibility checking into the welfare of Kenyans.

She also called on the national council of people living with disability to scrape off the assessment charges to the disabilities.

“Again I want to NCPWD to scrape off the assessment charges, because this we do not all PWD’s need assessment”

Late last year, Mkalla Shanga, a Mombasa based activist further accused the county government of failing to address PWD’s challenges.

He says the infrastructural frame work ongoing in the entire county has failed to address the disability plight”

The human rights defender indicated that most of the public utilities in the county are not accessible to PWDs.

He added “the facilities lack ramps giving PWD's an extremely strenuous exercise when going about their business in central business district"

Mkalla put the county government to task saying that PWDs pay taxes to the government.

Attempts to speak to the county health officials bore no fruit.
