Mombasa senator Mohammed Faki has greatly condemned
terrorists sheltering in Islam to commit atrocities in the country.
He says Islam religion does not condone acts of terrorism,
radicalization and violent extremism.
Addressing the media in Mombasa on Saturday after officially
opening a Muslims scholars conference at Moi University Coast Campus Hon Faki argued
that true Muslims adhere to Islamic teachings and principles.
“Islam means peace. Those people sheltering in
religion to commit atrocities are not true Muslims” he noted
The senator also noted that Islam distances itself
from actions that are contrary to societal norms.
He urged the youth to shun from radicalization activities.
“Islam conforms to the norms of the society. True Muslims
pray five times a day and stick to its teachings” the senator said
The senator further indicated that the youth play a
fundamental role in nation building and should therefore engage in meaningful
activities.
On the issue of the referendum debate, Faki said
there is need to make appropriate reforms to the electoral body.
He opined that currently, the electoral body, IEBC has
insufficient commissioners to undertake the national exercise.
“I think IEBC needs to be reformed and changed. As
it is now there are inadequate commissioners” he noted
He however said there is a need for constitutional experts
to come together and deliberate on the thorny issues affecting Kenyans that
need a national debate.
“There is a need for experts to come to a consensus
on what is to be debated on during the referendum” Hon Faki pointed out
The conference was attended by over 60 Muslim
scholars from all the six Coast counties and the East African region.
It focused among other emerging issues:
radicalization and good governance in the region.
